I think the apology is very good. He admitted that while he was not a part of the offense that occurred, that he saw how it was still affecting the Asian community in the present. I think that can be a model for everyone who claims that they were not a part of slavery, did not own slaves, did not participate in Jim Crow, etc, didn't take part in colonizing/ massacring the Native Americans - because while they may not have done those activities, the effects of those activities are still pervasive in our culture.

ReplyDeleteThe only part of the apology that rubbed me wrong was when he explicitly said he wasn't part of the organization at that time. I took it to be his disassociating himself personally with the incident. But you are so right in you perspective on it! --he is taking responsibility for things his predecessors did that he now inherits responsibility for, much like the examples you mentioned. Thank you for pointing that out!
